Alex Albon had hopes he could earn points in Austria, but it didn’t materialize – British rider Williams finished 12th. However, he stressed that the improved FW44 was still more efficient.
Alex Albon: “I was hoping that I could earn points in Austria, although I honestly understood that this would take a lot of effort. In addition, on the Grand Prix track you have to measure how aggressively you have to attack, so that the tires do not wear out beforehand. And I almost had to go into qualifying pace at the start of the distance, as I was trying to fend off Valtteri Bottas’ attacks.
I understood that it would affect the speed later – and it happened. By the way, in Austria for the first time we really tested how the improved car works on a dry track. We can already say that the level of downforce has increased, and that is the most important thing, but in general the characteristics of the car have remained the same.
Now we have to try to smooth out somehow, achieve a more correct balance of the chassis, and this should help improve the results on the circle. But it seems that we have already laid a normal foundation, after which we have to get started with fine settings.
I will stay in Spielberg for the time being, my plans are to enjoy the Austrian schnitzels to the fullest and also participate in the tire tests. On Tuesday I will observe Nicholas Latifi’s work on these tests, after which I will listen to his opinion. In my opinion, the main task is to help Pirelli improve the performance of the front tires, which leave a lot to be desired this year, and therefore it is not very pleasant to drive.
I think this is exactly the direction in which the work on the tests will go. I don’t have anything against them by the way, because I missed last year, didn’t drive in Formula 1, so it’s useful for me to get miles. On the one hand, the start of the season was not bad, on the other hand I still feel like I haven’t completely lost the “rust” yet. So the more miles I drive, the better for me. I’m not at the stage yet to complain and say that testing is boring.”
