Enrico Cardile on Ferrari’s problems in 2023

In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Ferrari team head of the chassis department Enrico Cardile spoke about the problems of the 2023 car…

Enrico Cardile: “Our problems mainly concerned the chassis. The main difference with Red Bull is in the design of the side pontoons. Ours were more voluminous. We used some of the pontoons to better control the air turbulence at the front tires. This allowed air to be guided to the rear to create more downforce. It’s true that we had to do some work to get the turbulent flow under control.

With these side pontoons we did not have to build a V-shaped chassis. We simply hidden all the control units under the radiators and set the lower side protection to the maximum permitted height. This made it possible to successfully design the front part of the bottom.

We know why we performed weaker in the race than in qualifying. This is due to the aerodynamics of the car. We achieve maximum downforce if a number of conditions are met. These conditions occur less often in the race than in qualifying.

To completely solve these problems we would need a new chassis and gearbox. In other words: a completely new car. For many reasons it was impossible to do this during the season.”
