Andrea Stella: Piastri exceeded all expectations

Andrea Stella, the head of the McLaren team, is confident that Oscar Piastri fully deserves the highly commendable reviews directed at him over the past year.

At the end of his debut season in Formula 1, the young Australian received the FIA award as best rookie of the year: he was on the podium twice, won the Saturday sprint in Qatar and scored 97 points at the end of the race. championship and took 9th place in the individual rankings.

Throughout the year, the motorsport press has been generous with its invective when writing about Oscar’s success, and Stella believes this is entirely justified.

“These are fully deserved points,” said the McLaren team boss while taking part in Australia’s KTM Summer Grill podcast. – From my point of view, Oscar exceeded expectations. We were of course optimistic, we really wanted him to spend his first season in Formula 1 with McLaren, but what he achieved on track and to some extent off track exceeded all expectations.

I think there were two things that really impressed us. First of all I would like to point out the sheer speed. Secondly, he is in no hurry to show this speed when he doesn’t have to. Overall, he has an interesting approach.

For example, in the first training it is not at all necessary to go to the limit, since this is a session in which the driver must get into the rhythm, understand everything in detail, in order to get everything aligned in the future and very driving fast laps.

It was this approach, which allowed him to gradually understand everything and reach the required speeds, that allowed Oscar to achieve an excellent qualification in Suzuka, where he took 2nd place, although this was one of the most difficult circuits of the championship is. This circuit with its fast corners does not forgive mistakes, and he had never competed on it before.

Absolutely, if you don’t know he’s a newcomer, you can’t know. Oscar uses his talent correctly, because he is a very calm and balanced man and knows how to control his psychological state. In my opinion, this is a very important quality for a racer, because it allows his brain to work normally, not to be distracted by secondary stimuli and to separate what is really important.
