Former Formula 1 driver Guido van der Garde recalled in an interview with RacingNews365 the situation with the dismissal of his compatriot Nick de Vries at AlpgaTauri after ten Grand Prix…
Guido van der Garde: “At the beginning of the season, the AlphaTauri car was acting nervous, and Yuki Tsunoda couldn’t handle it either.
Nick felt enormous pressure after just a few races. You can imagine how difficult it is for a driver when Helmut Marko shouts every weekend that you have to be better and faster, that you have to be ahead of Tsunoda and become the leader of the team. Obviously you’re going to break down at some point.
The expectations were wrong. It is hard to imagine that a newcomer in Formula 1 can get used to it completely and gather a team around him in six months. After the only Grand Prix with a Williams in Italy ’22 everyone for some reason decided that Nick would not have any problems.
Too bad he didn’t get more time. Some riders take longer than others to reach their potential. But I know how good Nick is, how dedicated he is to his work.
I think Nick can earn points at the end of the season. Maybe Helmut Marko would have calmed down a bit by then. When the team is relaxed, you immediately perform better. You become one with the machine. So I think what Ricciardo showed at the end of the season, Nick could also show.”
