FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem recalled the federation’s role amid rumors of contradictions between the FIA and Formula 1 owners Liberty Media…
Mohammed bin Sulayem: “I am absolutely certain of one thing: there will never be a day when you wake up and the FIA is no longer there. This is different for other parties. Liberty may sell Formula 1 to someone else and it will change ownership. But the FIA will remain. I respect Liberty, they are here to make a profit. But we also know our responsibilities and tasks.
I want to make my position clear. I’m not against anyone’s business. There are people here making money, every product we have, every sponsor, every partner, if they invest money, it will bring a return. Nobody does anything for nothing. The difference with the FIA is that we are not about making a profit.
Some people are talking about a split between the FIA and Liberty Media, but they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Do they really think that major manufacturers will decide to hold their championship without a regulatory body? Do they really think anyone will invest money in this? Do you want this to be a new form of wrestling where you know who is going to win? Where does someone invest money and change the rules as they see fit?
No, there must first be clear rules, and then you can invest money. Yes, it’s a show. But a show according to the rules, where the FIA exercises a fair and correct control. The rest is up to you, your team and your driver.”
