French journalist and commentator Lionel Froissart, who works for Belgian company RBTF Sport, which provides French commentary for the official F1 TV service, has been suspended for inappropriate criticism of Lance Stroll.
Commenting on what happened on track during a live broadcast from Austria, which was also watched in Stroll’s home country of Canada, Lionel Froissart said on lap 43: “It is clear that Aston Martin wants to keep Vettel, the team needs someone who understands cars!”
After a chuckle from his commentary colleague Gaetan Vigneron, Froissart continued: “Isn’t it the autistic Stroll who will explain this to them?” Vigneron immediately objected: “It’s too hard, you’ve gone too far.” To which Froissart replied, “But it is true.”
The commentator’s comment sparked a furious reaction on social networks and the F1 TV service removed the French track before the final race. The RBTF press office has issued an official statement condemning the commentator’s behavior and an official investigation has been launched against him.
