Wolff: We are not delaying regulatory approval for motorcycles

The FIA World Council had planned to approve power plant regulations for the 2026 season in June, but this has not happened yet. In Austria, Toto Wolff and Mattia Binotto were forced at a team leaders’ press conference to refute rumors that Mercedes and Ferrari were deliberately delaying the adoption of engine regulations so that their potential rivals Audi and Porsche would have less time to prepare.

“It’s quite the opposite – we are not delaying the adoption of the regulation, but we want it to come into effect,” Mercedes chief executive Toto Wolff said on Saturday. – We were told that these two companies will announce their participation in Formula 1 at the end of last year, but this has not happened yet. And I don’t know why.

we want them [Audi и Porsche] become part of the show. They have been sitting at the negotiating table for a long time, discussing the regulations, but have not yet announced their participation.”

In turn, the head of Ferrari, Mattia Binotto, emphasized that power plant suppliers have agreed to abandon the MGU-H engine generator from 2026 to make it easier for Audi and Porsche to build the engine.

“We only gave up MGU-H to help them join Formula 1, although we don’t think such a refusal is correct,” said Mattia Binotto. – We have compromised, although we know this technology well and believe it is great for Formula 1. This fact alone shows that we are very positive and constructive.

The new regulation has not yet been adopted, because it is time to do everything right. At the moment we are not ready to approve it – not just the current manufacturers, but also the FIA, as they continue to negotiate. The new regulations are not ready yet, but we are sure that Audi and Porsche will join Formula 1 in the future. I think we did our best to keep them happy.”
