Tom McCullough, chief engineer of Aston Martin F1, stated that his team must first of all achieve ideal and stable performance, and this is the main condition, without which it will be impossible to overtake the leaders in the championship.
In the first eight races of the season, Fernando Alonso stood on the podium six times, and although the team slowed down a bit later, such a confident start to the championship saw Aston Martin take 5th place in the Constructors’ Championship, i.e. rise a few places higher than in 2022.
Nevertheless, closer to the middle of the season there was a decline in results as opponents continued to improve. At the same time, the racing team of the Silverstone team is considered one of the best in Formula 1, and on the days of the Grand Prix it acts very harmoniously. Once upon a time, it was this quality that sometimes allowed Force India to ‘go over its head’, i.e. show decent results despite a much more modest budget compared to top teams.
“I think our team as a whole has done a good job on race weekends in the past, that’s what we’re known for,” McCullough told RacingNews365. “Of course we have now gone further and are trying to develop a car with which we can compete at the forefront.”
Fernando Alonso achieved the most points last year, including eight podium finishes, allowing the two-time world champion to end the season in 4th place in the individual rankings. At the same time, his partner, Lance Stroll, was only 10th, but it should be emphasized that the Canadian left the race more than once due to problems with the car – for example, this happened in Saudi Arabia and Japan.
“Things like this happen sometimes,” McCullough admitted. “But if we want to compete with the leaders, we need to have a perfect weekend. This is exactly the example that Red Bull gives us: this team is completely in order in terms of technical reliability and functions flawlessly, which is why it has been able to win so many races.
This is the standard we should strive for. We are not just dealing with one area; there are a lot of areas where we need to improve at least a little. We understand that if we provide our drivers with good cars, they will achieve good results for the team. This is exactly where maximum attention should be paid.”
