Vijay Mallya sentenced to prison in absentia

India’s Supreme Court has sentenced former Force India Formula 1 team principal Vijay Mallya to four months in prison for disobeying a court decision handed down in 2017 in the Kingfisher Airlines bankruptcy case. Then Malia was found guilty of transferring $40 million to his children instead of paying the airline’s debts.

Indian authorities believe that in 2009, Malya received loans from local banks to develop Kingfisher Airlines, but instead spent the money on its own needs. Malia denied all charges and assured that the airline went bankrupt due to real economic problems.

Despite the court’s verdict, Vijay Mallya remains at large, having lived in the UK for many years. In 2020, his attempts to get an extradition ban to India failed and in June last year, Indian authorities declared that “Malia’s extradition has become final”, but the businessman still lives in London and came to the Grand Prix. as a guest at the beginning of the month Under the UK.

According to the local press, arrest in absentia is quite a rare practice in India, as the law requires the presence of the suspect at the trial. In addition to the conclusion, Malia must provide $40 million + 8% as security within four weeks to avoid property seizures.
