Tim Mailion is the new sporting director of the FIA

Personnel changes at the FIA continue: Tim Mailion has been appointed sporting director, but it also became known about the dismissal of Tim Goss, who until recently held the position of technical director of single-seater races. Apparently Goss will move to one of the Formula 1 teams.

This is the third resignation of such a prominent figure in the FIA leadership following the departures of Steve Nielsen and Deborah Mayer, who led the Women in Motorsport Commission.

Meillion, who has served as the federation’s safety director since 2021, has now been promoted to fill the position left by Nielsen. It has not yet been announced who will replace Tim Goss.

Tim Mailion will report to Nicholas Tombasis, FIA Director of Single Seat Racing. Mailion once worked for a long time in various positions at Red Bull Racing, after which he switched to Sauber in 2015, where he was appointed chief racing engineer. He subsequently became chief engineer of the BMW factory program in the DTM touring series, but also managed to work in Formula E, after which he was invited to the FIA in 2019. Tim Maylon is Canadian by birth, but has lived for a long time in Great Britain, where he obtained his university degree and began his career in the motorsport industry.

Nicholas Tombasis: “I am pleased that Tim is taking on the position of sporting director, he has extensive experience in motorsport and is a specialist of the highest level. He will take on a key role in cleaning up our sporting affairs and legislative processes, and he will lead efforts to improve racing governance.

At the same time, we regret the departure of such a specialist as Tim Goss. He has been involved in important work in the FIA’s technical department, but we understand he intends to change the direction of his career. We respect his decision and wish him the best of luck.”

Tim Mailion: “I am delighted to take on the role of sporting director. We have already significantly improved race management with the support of the Remote Control Center (ROC), and it is my job to take this to the next level. We will also look at many sporting aspects and I am ready to pay more and more attention to this work.”

Nils Wittich remains FIA race director and reports to Meilion.
