Max Verstappen tested for two days in Portimao in a Ferrari 296 GT3 with Thierry Vermeulen, the son of his manager.
Similar tests took place in Mugello in November and it has now been decided to repeat them, as Vermeulen will compete in the colors of Verstappen.COM Racing for the Emil Frey Racing team and will be coached by Verstappen’s father Jos.
The team was impressed with Max’s results…
Laurence Fray-Hilty, team manager: “The aim of these tests is to support Thierry and improve our results using feedback from Max.
Verstappen was in the car both days. The first day they took turns riding about 60 miles, trying out many different settings. It was a great honor for us to use his services and conduct tests together with him.
It’s always interesting to meet a famous person. You think you know him, but in real life he turns out to be completely different. Even in the GT3 car, the feedback from him was on a completely different level to anything I had seen before. Max is a world class racer.
He got behind the wheel and showed an excellent result in the first lap. After watching the video and telemetry from the onboard camera, I was impressed with how quickly it was able to adapt, getting the most out of the car almost immediately.
There were other GT3 cars on the track that day, but Verstappen drove at a completely different level than everyone else. There are good drivers who are not particularly fast in a GT3 due to lack of experience, but Max is different. If a car has four wheels, it goes fast.
When it comes to helping develop the car, he’s great. The car is different from Formula 1, but the physics work the same everywhere. Max’s input was instrumental in evaluating the various installation options. He helped Thierry and the whole team a lot.”
