In 2014, Formula 1 switched to hybrid power plants; in 2026 the rules will change again – the abandonment of MGU-H and the increased efficiency of the hybrid component aroused the interest of Audi and Honda. FIA director of single-seater racing Nicholas Tombasis said the concept of a new power unit, due to appear in the 2030s, is already being discussed.
Nicholas Tombasis: “The regulations for 2026 have been approved, but we are already discussing the next regulations for engines.
There are many offers. This could include switching to more environmentally friendly fuels or hydrogen, which we have already worked on a lot at the FIA, or using more electrical energy. Here it is important to move in the same direction with car manufacturers; we can’t choose a path that has nothing to do with street cars.
Relevance is important for Formula 1. This is the main goal and I think everyone in the paddock understands that we have a serious task ahead of us.”
