Former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa believes it is too early for the Italian team to divide the roles of first and second driver between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. According to Massa, who played for Scuderia from 2006 to 2013, the team must first solve problems with the reliability of the car.
Felipe Massa: “In 2006 it was very clear who was the first in the team and who was the second driver. But then Kimi Raikkonen came to us. We agreed with him that we would fight each other before the race in Spa, and then whoever is left behind in the individual competition would help his partner.
I don’t know what the situation is at Ferrari now with the division of roles, but their main priority should be reliability. To begin with, they have to solve this problem and only then think about which of the riders should be the first number.
It is possible that Leclerc will retire in the next race and Sainz will win. It’s too early to decide the roles because even in Maranello they don’t know which of their drivers can finish the next race.”
