2009 world champion Jenson Button believes Lewis Hamilton is now much better than he was five or six years ago, and if Mercedes builds a fast car, the seven-time world champion will become Max Verstappen’s main rival in 2024.
Jenson Button: “If you’ve been winning for many years in a row and then suddenly the winning streak comes to an end, there could be two paths into the future. The first option is to say: “There’s no point in all this anymore, I want to end my career. “I have been at my peak for years, but I haven’t won a race in two years.”
The second option is that the driver’s desire to return to the top increases. I think this applies to Lewis. In terms of speed he is as good as ever, but now he feels more confident and makes fewer mistakes. Lewis is better now than he was five or six years ago.
His rivals will have a hard time if he gets his hands on a car quickly enough to challenge for victories. When someone is as confident as Lewis, it is difficult to beat him. You can see that in the example of Max Verstappen.”
When asked who will be Red Bull Racing’s main rival in 2024, Jenson replied: Mercedes. Over the past ten years, the sport has been dominated by Mercedes and Red Bull.
I would like to say Ferrari, and indeed they have become Red Bull’s main rivals at the end of the season, but I think Mercedes will make more progress in 2024. I don’t know if it will be enough to fight for the title.”
