At the 1997 Luxembourg Grand Prix, Jordan had a good chance of their first victory, but team drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher collided. Reflecting on these events on the Formula for Success podcast, Eddie Jordan said he was ready to fire both…
Eddie Jordan: “In 1997 we had a very fast car. I got the impression that when Giancarlo was in second place, he wouldn’t let his teammate pass, even though Ralf was clearly faster. This caused them to collide with each other in the hairpin bend.
At that moment I just went crazy. Even in the most liberal country in the world, what I said to them then would have been censored. I called them two complete fools, said they didn’t deserve to drive our cars, and upon return to base I would fire them.
Of course, I calmed down after that, but I never took my words as a joke, because their clash cost us a lot. As punishment, I made them spend a week on base and work with the mechanics on repairing their cars.
I wanted them to understand how much damage they had caused to the team by their actions. “I’m not just talking about financial loss or pain, but simply the frustration they have unnecessarily caused the team.”
