Prema Racing keeps an eye on IndyCar

Italian team Prema Racing, known for its success in youth formulas and now also in endurance racing, has plans to expand into the American market and has the IndyCar series in its sights.

The drivers who have competed for Prema at various times are well known in the motorsport world, in particular the Formula 2 titles were won by Charles Leclerc (2017), Mick Schumacher (2020) and Oscar Piastri (2021), and in 2022 the team won the European Le Man’s Series. It can be added that in the same 2021 Russian racer Robert Shvartsman, who also worked with this team for a long time, became vice-champion of F2.

The American publication Racer writes, citing a Prema representative, that the team is currently exploring the possibility of creating its own team in IndyCar, but the details of the project have not yet been announced.

Now there are two riders in this American championship who rode for Prema in previous years: Marcus Armstrong and Felix Rosenqvist. The Swede is very excited about the prospect of meeting old friends again if the Italian project actually comes to fruition.

“Then my dream would come true and I would be reunited with old friends,” said Felix, who moved to Meyer Shank Racing this year. “In 2008 I drove one race for Prema in Spa and in 2015 we won the European title together in Formula 3. This is a great team, the best in Europe, with the exception of the Formula 1 teams. When it comes to IndyCar , it will become a force to be reckoned with.”

According to Racer, Prema has already invited Piers Phillips, an experienced American specialist who previously worked as head of IndyCar teams such as Arrow McLaren and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, who helps navigate the world of overseas motorsport. If all goes well, the new team could start working in IndyCar as early as 2025.
