At Silverstone, the crowd chased Max Verstappen, in Austria they applauded Lewis Hamilton’s accident and behaved inappropriately in the stands. Red Bull Racing head Christian Horner thinks this is a result of Formula 1’s growing popularity.
Christian Horner: “Growth in popularity is polarizing fans, but it’s happening in other sports too. New spectators come in, Formula 1 breaks attendance records at every Grand Prix – with so many new fans on each track, they have their own heroes and anti-heroes. Spectators always have certain preferences for the pilot or the team.
With regard to the individual incidents that took place in Spielberg, we do not condone any form of insult, bullying or racism. This is where the Formula 1 community is absolutely united. It has no place in our sport.”
