We talked about the visit of a representative delegation of Honda Corporation executives to the Austrian Grand Prix. To many in the paddock, the appearance of such high-ranking guests was only interpreted as Honda’s desire to return to Formula 1.
Among those who came to Spielberg was Koiji Watanabe, president of the Honda Racing Corporation, which is responsible for the company’s participation in racing competitions. In an interview with reporters, Watanabe made it clear that Honda is not thinking about returning to Formula 1 now, but he has not denied such a possibility in the future.
Koiji Watanabe: “Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, so we are constantly monitoring what is happening in the championship. In the company we have not discussed anything about 2026, we have no plans, but the door is not closed.
As far as I understand, Formula 1 is moving in the direction of achieving CO2 neutrality. At Honda we are following the same course, so in the case of participating in Formula 1, we do not have to deviate from our plan.
If we want to return to Formula 1 in 2026, the decision will have to be made in the next year and a half.”
