Lineups 2023: contracts and rumours

We’ve gathered current information about driver contracts and all sorts of rumors about the squads for the 2023 season. The material is regularly updated, the current version is from July 14.

Red Bull Racing

Red Bull Racing’s selection for 2023 is undeniable. Max Verstappen will continue to play for the team from Milton Keynes until the end of 2028, his teammate Sergio Perez extended his contract in May until the end of 2024.

Ferrari

In 2019 Ferrari extended the contract with Charles Leclerc for five years – the Monegask will continue to play for the Scuderia. Carlos Sainz’s contract with the Italian squad expired at the end of 2022, but in April the deal with the Spaniard was extended for a further two years. The composition of Ferrari will not change next year.

Mercedes

Last season, Mercedes officially extended the contract with Lewis Hamioton for two years. The seven-time world champion will continue to play for the team from Brackley in 2023.

The contract with George Russell was originally only intended for 2022, but the young driver’s results this season are in line with the management of Mercedes. A message about the continuation of the collaboration with Russell is expected before or shortly after the summer holidays.

McLaren

Formally, both McLaren drivers have contracts for 2023. At the start of the year, the team extended the contract with Lando Norris until the end of 2025.

Daniel Ricciardo also has a valid deal with McLaren for next season, but the Australian’s lackluster performance in the first half of the season has led the paddock to actively discuss possible candidates for a replacement. Among the contenders named Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, Colton Herta and even Sebastian Vettel.

Tired of rumors about his future, Daniel Ricciardo released a statement saying he had no intention of leaving Formula 1 and would continue to drive for McLaren in 2023.

alpine

Esteban Okon has a contract with the team until the end of 2024. The French driver is getting the most out of the car and showing consistent results – we will see Okon driving in Alpine in 2023 as well.

It is much more interesting who will be his partner. Fernando Alonso’s contract expires at the end of the season. Fernando himself is not going to end his Formula 1 career, but he recognizes the possibility of a team change if he fails to negotiate with Alpine.

The team is happy to work with the Formula 1 champion, but Alpine has a fast and promising reserve driver Oscar Piastri, who has promised a place behind the wheel in 2023. And if Alpine can’t agree with Alonso, he’s replaced by Oscar.

Alfa Romeo

In 2021 Valtteri Bottas signed a multi-year contract with Alfa Romeo. The team has not disclosed the terms of the deal, but it is clear that the Finn will continue to play next season.

The contract with Guanyu Zhou has only been signed for the current season. The Chinese racer performed well in the first half of the year, but you should not wait for the imminent announcement of the name of Bottas’ partner. Alfa Romeo will not make any announcements for the home round at Monza. And while Zhou has a good chance of a contract, given Formula 1’s return to China next year, Ferrari protégé Mick Schumacher could join the team.

hare

Kevin Magnussen unexpectedly returned to Formula 1 before the start of the season to replace Nikita Mazepin. The Danish rider lived up to expectations, of the 34 points he had earned halfway through the season, Kevin Haas brought more than half – 22. There is no doubt that the team will offer the rider a contract for 2023.

Mick Schumacher’s results at the start of the season did not please the rider himself, his fans and the team management. But at Silverstone, Mick earned the first points and consolidated the result in the next stage in Austria. If the German perseveres, he will stay with Haas or even get an offer from Alfa Romeo.

Possible replacements were Oscar Piastri and Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi.

Nominees: Kevin Magnussen, Mick Schumacher, Oscar Piastri, Pietro Fittipaldic

AlphaTauri

Pierre Gasly hoped to continue his career with Red Bull Racing in 2023, but the team made a bet on Sergio Perez. The French rider was offered an offer to extend the contract with AlphaTauri for next season, but Gasly agreed due to lack of other options.

It is currently unknown who will be his partner in 2023. Yuki Tsunodu’s results are not astonishing and the collision with a partner at Silverstone did not yield any points in his favor. If Helmut Marko decides to put one of the youth program participants behind the wheel, the most experienced Liam Lawson has the most opportunities.

Theoretically, a place behind the wheel could be offered to Dennis Hauger, but there are doubts the Norwegian driver is ready to move to Formula 1. Unclear prospects for young drivers give Yuki Tsunode a chance to extend his contract with AlphaTauri.

Aston Martin

Lance Stroll has a multi-year contract with his father’s team, but many believe Lawrence must find a stronger driver if he wants the team to claim top spots.

Sebastian Vettel’s contract expires at the end of the season. The rider has not yet made a decision on the plans for 2023, but sports director Mike Krak has repeatedly indicated that he would like to continue the collaboration.

If Sebastian leaves, he could be replaced by Fernando Alonso, who has already negotiated with Aston Martin in previous years, or Oscar Piastri.

Candidates: Lance Stroll, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastric

Williams

Alex Albon’s contract with Williams expires at the end of the season. The team is pleased with the work with the Thai rider and is ready to offer him a new deal. Chances are Alex will accept him if there are no alternatives.

Nicholas Latifi’s fate seems more uncertain. The Canadian’s father brings a solid budget to the team, but Latifi’s results leave a lot to be desired. Nicholas himself admitted he needs to improve if he wants to stay with Williams in 2023.

Formula E champion Nick de Vries, who drove Williams for Friday practice in Barcelona, has been named as one of the replacement candidates.

Nominees: Alex Albon, Nicholas Latifi, Nick de Vries
