Graham Watson: Hamilton is a brand, Verstappen is a driver

Graham Watson, former team manager of AlphaTauri, compared two Formula 1 champions: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. In his opinion, Max ‘single-handedly saved’ Formula 1 and attracted new fans to the championship, while many people do not associate Hamilton’s name only with racing.

“Max is the best thing that happened to Formula 1,” the official website of the three-time world champion quotes Graham Watson. – When Max left our team for Red Bull Racing, I compared it to Michael Schumacher’s switch to Ferrari. At that time, Michael seriously increased the popularity of Formula 1. Just look at old photos of Hockenheim or Spa – the stands were buried in Schumacher flags.

I believe Max single-handedly saved Formula 1 because he created the same interest that Schumacher did in his time. In Austria and Spa people fill the stands to see Max perform. The last time I saw something like this was during the Schumacher era.

My wife is 60 years old and she is a big fan of Max because of his flying style. His actions on the court are interesting to watch. Max attracted a new audience to Formula 1.

Lewis Hamilton is very talented, but he has many interests away from the track, which makes many people wonder: is he really a Formula 1 driver? Lewis is associated with many other areas. Lewis Hamilton is a brand, and Max Verstappen is a Formula 1 driver, and that won’t change.

I’m not saying Hamilton is doing anything wrong, but he’s not a racing nerd like Max. Verstappen is one of those drivers who, outside of race weekends, try to spend all their time on the simulator or behind the wheel of a kart. He continually strives to improve.”
