Bernie Ecclestone criticized Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. According to the former head of Formula 1, the two Britons performed below their capabilities last season.
Bernie Ecclestone: “Red Bull waited patiently all those years when Mercedes won, gradually replacing every weak link. Now they have the best team, the best car and the best driver. They did a brilliant job.
The expression “Trend is your friend” doesn’t just apply to the stock market. If anyone can beat Red Bull, it will be Ferrari, not Mercedes. It’s not just about the car. Hamilton was a bit of a flop last season and Russell wasn’t as good as he thought. In any case, they should not have lost so dramatically to Verstappen.”
Speaking of Max, Bernie suggested that the three-time world champion would have won races with one of the leading Formula 1 teams, not just Red Bull Racing.
“Christian Horner has done a brilliant job and Max is the benchmark for all drivers at the moment,” Bernie continues. “You can put Max behind the wheel of a McLaren, maybe a Ferrari or a Mercedes, and he will still keep winning.”
When asked who impressed him most, Bernie said: “The young Australian Oscar Piastri. One day he will be a champion.”
Commenting on Mick Schumacher’s decision to sign with Alpine and pursue a career in endurance racing, Bernie said: “He never had the chance to demonstrate his capabilities. Mick was on the wrong team [Haas] and with the wrong people. They took him for his name, but they were never really interested in whether he was a good racer or not.”
