In 2024, Robert Kubica will compete in the WEC for the Italian AF Corse, which de facto has the status of a Ferrari factory team. We can say that his place will become reality, because he will drive a Ferrari racing car, but not in Formula 1. Although he once had such plans, fate would have it differently.
Everything changed dramatically for Robert after an accident on the Ronde di Andorra rally circuit in the winter of 2011. He then suffered serious injuries and could have lost his life. But even before that sad event, Kubica had signed preliminary agreements with the Ferrari team and in 2012 he would become Fernando Alonso’s new partner, replacing Felipe Massa.
“I have always respected Fernando and still have a lot of respect for him,” Robert told Gazzetto dello Sport. – When we competed in Formula 1, this attitude was mutual. It is often said that a teammate is every driver’s first rival to beat. But I’ve always believed that it’s your job to be ahead of everyone, including your partner.
I don’t think it would be difficult for me to beat Fernando in the same car, but I certainly wanted to take on this challenge. He and I look at a lot of things the same way, and if a team has two riders who get along, that team gets an advantage.
In theory there was a risk that our relationship would deteriorate, although in reality I think we could achieve a lot together. The scenario for the future was exactly this: in 2012 I was going to move to Ferrari, where Fernando was racing at the time, but then that accident happened.
Thanks to her, this did not happen, but life presented me with a different scenario. And now I’m happy that a new adventure awaits me at Le Mans behind the wheel of a red car. How long will I keep racing? I am fortunate that my passion for speed has become my job. Another year is coming, but I still feel the same love for motorsport.
And at the age of 39, she remains the engine that keeps me moving forward. I get scared at the thought of having to end my career and find a job that doesn’t suit me. I am a racer and want to participate. I like what I do now, so there is a risk that I will continue racing for more than a year.”
On March 2, Robert Kubica will have to go to the start of the “1812 km Qatar” race with a Ferrari 499P hypercar in the same team as Robert Schwartzman and Yifei Ye.
