At the start of the week, IndyCar driver Colton Herta spent two days working on the McLaren test in Portimão, using last year’s car. The head of the British team, Andreas Seidl, did not rule out the possibility that Colton could drive the MCL36 in Friday practice during the season.
“The aim of the tests was to give Colton the first chance to evaluate a Formula 1 car and explore its capabilities,” quoted race fans Andreas Seidl. – For two days he worked on different programs. First we let Colton get used to the car and then we try out different flying techniques.
For example, he could learn aspects of a race weekend, such as comparing different tire compounds, driving with different fuel levels, running simulations of qualifying and racing. I have to say that the team is impressed with the way Colton has handled everything and with his professional approach.
In the coming days we will study the information in detail. We will get a first impression of Colton’s potential behind the wheel of our car and we will have a better understanding of how to proceed. Obviously, these tests were necessary to understand the next possible steps.
As you know, according to the regulations, twice during the season, in Friday practice, we are obliged to put a rookie behind the wheel. We plan to do this after the summer holidays. The team has yet to decide at what stages this will happen and who will be behind the wheel. We will investigate that in the coming weeks.”
