Honda USA may leave WEC due to Formula 1

The American division of Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), which has joined the development of a hybrid power plant for Formula 1, may reconsider its priorities and discontinue the program of possible participation in the World Endurance Championship with the Acura ARX-06 hypercar .

Currently, the WTRAndretti team, of which Jenson Button is one of the eight drivers, is preparing for the 24 Hours of Daytona, the first round of the new season of the IMSA series, with two such cars from the LMDh class.

But by 2026, the Japanese company must create a new generation hybrid power plant for the Aston Martin F1, and this project becomes a priority for the company. Therefore, specialists from the California-based company HRC USA are already starting to work on it, as we wrote in December.

“We are now in Formula 1 and we have to pay attention to this,” said David Salters, president of HRC USA, in an interview with Sportscar365. – Let’s see. Everything must be carefully analyzed. We are joining forces within our organization and that makes sense. This is an important step. Our company is primarily responsible for the North American direction, for the American division of Honda and Acura. But now we have more options. If there is a need, some of our talented staff can help those involved in Formula 1. We are already gradually getting involved, but gradually the work can increase.

If it is decided to participate in the WEC, we may also be entrusted with this, which means that we will pick up the program for participation in the World Championship. But such decisions are made at the highest level by the company’s Japanese management.

But can we handle it, and does this all make sense? We will continue to ask these questions and we will continue to analyze all of this.”

According to Salters, we are also talking about Honda’s possible participation in the WEC from 2025: “Everyone knows that predicting the future is quite difficult. There we will see what awaits us. However, our main goal is to do a good job while working for Acura. This is what worries me most right now.

Then we will analyze everything else and see what we do, what exactly will be important for Honda and for Acura.”
