Fernando Alonso was unable to participate in the Austrian Grand Prix sprint on Saturday due to electronic problems and his teammate Esteban Ocon stopped on track immediately after the finish due to a fuel pump failure.
Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer said both defective parts on Alonso and Ocon’s cars come from a list of standard parts the team buys from suppliers selected by the FIA.
Otmar Szafnauer: “We have to source these components from suppliers chosen by the FIA. The fuel pump was originally designed for road cars, not Formula 1, and therein lies the problem. In Formula 1, completely different vibrations act on the part, leading to failure due to fatigue.
Of course we are disappointed and will now work with the supplier to prevent a recurrence.”
