Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has spoken highly of his former driver Carlos Sainz. In 2015, the Spaniard played for Toro Rosso together with Max Verstappen and according to Marco, his future career could have been different if Carlos had had a different partner.
Helmut Marko: “There is no doubt that Sainz is a great driver. At Toro Rosso he performed almost at the same level as Max, but Carlos was unlucky that Verstappen was his teammate.
The atmosphere in the team between them was quite toxic, so I didn’t see any way to keep Carlos with us. This took him first to Renault, then to McLaren and finally racing for Ferrari.
Sainz was very fast in the youth series. In his first tests behind the wheel of Formula 1 at Silverstone, he drove slightly faster in fast corners on the first attempt than Sebastian Vettel, who was our benchmark at the time.
Carlos performed almost at the same level as Verstappen. But the time is almost here, so when we had to choose between Max and Carlos, we had an obvious solution.
Carlos lived in the shadow of his father for a long time. He was wrongly portrayed as the spoiled son of a racing driver, but in reality Carlos had to constantly fight to take the next step in his career.”
