Before signing a contract with Mercedes, George Russell spent three years at Williams. The young British driver said three seasons in the outsider team were too long but he was not given the chance to leave Williams due to the nature of the contract.
George Russell: “We signed a contract with Williams in 2018, when the team was last in the championship. But before that Williams took second and fifth in the constructors’ championship, so we believed the team would come back and fight for third fifth in the championship.
We thought a three-year contract was a good option, I can fight for points and maybe even podiums. Now I understand that three seasons of flying alone in the last positions was too long. Unfortunately Claire Williams did a good job and drafted the contract in such a way that I couldn’t leave.
On the other hand, it would be very difficult for me to join Mercedes in 2020 or 2021, when the car was built for Lewis and his driving style. Everyone is starting from scratch this season, so now is probably the right time.”
