Today, a press conference was held in Madrid at the IFEMA exhibition complex, at which it was announced that the capital of Spain will host the Formula 1 race from 2026. Moreover, it will be called the “Spanish Grand Prix”.
The contract has a multi-year nature and runs until 2035. The promoter is IFEMA Madrid; it commits to constructing a new circuit by 2026, combining the characteristics of the city ring and a stationary circuit.
The circuit will be built around the IFEMA exhibition center, the length of the circle will be 5.47 km and include 20 corners, but the project still needs to be approved at FIA level. The estimated time for the drivers to complete a lap in qualifying is 1 minute and 32 seconds.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1: “Madrid is a beautiful city with a rich history and has hosted the biggest sporting events in the world. Today’s announcement begins a new chapter for the Spanish Grand Prix as we see Madrid become the benchmark for all races on the European Formula 1 calendar.
I would like to thank the entire IFEMA team for being able to prepare an excellent proposal that fully corresponds to Formula 1’s vision of creating a real show that will last several days, combining sport and entertainment. We are ready to work with this team to organize the race in Madrid and welcome the start of a new era for the Spanish Grand Prix.”
