Reigning IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou has signed a contract with McLaren. The Spaniard came to the Formula 1 stages as a reserve driver, took part in Friday training and would switch to Arrow McLaren in the American racing series in 2024. But last year, Alex broke his contract with the team.
In a new interview, Palou said that one of the reasons he made this decision was the realization that he had virtually no chance of getting a place in Formula 1.
“I think the contract drama has made my relationship with the team much closer. Why? I don’t know, but now I have a normal relationship with McLaren. You always feel better after ending a relationship with a friend because it gives you a better understanding of each other and the reasons for the breakup. Suddenly this results in your relationship improving.
There was no sign that the door to Formula 1 would open for me and I was not prepared to keep waiting. I was constantly told to wait. If one of the key riders on the team were to get injured, I would have a chance. Pato [О’Вард] You may be waiting for someone to get hurt.”
