Pere Aragones, head of the Catalan government, believes Barcelona will continue to host a Formula 1 race in the coming years. He said this in an interview with local radio when asked to comment on the statements of Isabel Diaz Ayuso, president of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, which we quoted yesterday.
An official announcement that Madrid will host the 2026 World Cup from 2026 is expected soon, but Aragones believes this will not affect the Catalan government’s position.
“Sometimes in Catalonia we behave somewhat provincially, and even if we don’t know who sneezed, we immediately look in that direction,” he put it figuratively. – But there is absolutely no need to look in this direction all day…
If the Grand Prix can be held in other places, then this is a matter for Formula 1. We work together with our circuit Barcelona-Catalunya, we have excellent relations and I have no doubt that a great race will be held there in 2024, and in the future we will do everything we can to ensure that the Formula 1 race takes place in Catalonia after 2026.
Of course, we cannot underestimate the opportunities that exist in the nation’s capital. But let’s also appreciate what we have in Catalonia, let’s use our potential more effectively.
Our government continues to work with Formula 1 and we hope that an agreement will be reached before 2026 on the basis of which the race in Barcelona will be held in the coming years.
When such agreements are signed, we will inform you. Good progress has already been made and work is progressing positively. The future of Formula 1 in Barcelona depends on the circuit itself and Formula 1 – and nothing else.”
