On Thursday, the Ferrari team announced a contract extension with Charles Leclerc, but did not indicate for how long. Famous Italian journalist Leo Turini, commenting on the contract on his blog, suggested that the new agreement would last at least two years.
Of course I am happy that Charles is staying at Ferrari. Anyone who doesn’t like reading me knows that I am a Leclerc fan. We know each other and I love him. During the five seasons he spent in the red suit, he deserved a better car.
That said, it’s important to make a note. In Ferrari’s observable history, there has never been a case where the team, having announced a multi-year contract, did not indicate its validity period. This has never happened before.
This leads to a logical conclusion: the duration of the contract depends on external circumstances. This means that Charles will drive for Ferrari in 2025 and 2026, as it would be crazy to extend the contract for just one year, ignoring the transition to the new regulations in 2026.
What after this period? What happens next will apparently depend neither on him nor even on Frederic Vasseur. The results will decide everything.
Let me summarize. The news is good, but there is no certainty in the longer term.
PS As for Carlos Sainz, we’ll talk about him another time.
