Talks about Formula 1’s return to Africa have been going on for several years, but the project to hold a championship podium at the reconstructed Kyalami circuit could not be realised. However, at the beginning of this year, FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem said that the return of Formula 1 to the African continent would be a major event.
The Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that they dream of organizing the Grand Prix on the island of Zanzibar, which is part of Tanzania. The newspaper writes that the local government approved the project to build a race track in September 2022.
In November last year, a pool of investors was formed to implement the project. They invited former Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella as a technical advisor.
At this stage it is difficult to make predictions about Zanzibar’s chances of hosting a Formula 1 event. Construction of the circuit should start in 2025 and the opening is scheduled for 2027. If Formula 1 comes to Zanzibar, this will not happen until the end of the current decade.
