Formula 1 and MotoGP bosses are exploring the possibility of joining forces to host both world championships on the same weekend at a specific circuit.
Stefano Domenicali, the president of Formula 1, and Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna, which owns the commercial rights to the world championship, have spent some time discussing possible options. And the idea was first expressed last spring.
There are currently four circuits that host both Formula 1 and MotoGP races throughout the season: Barcelona, Red Bull Ring, Silverstone and Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
It is unlikely that such a joint project will be organized in the next two years, mainly due to the complexity of preparing the circuit in terms of safety, as different standards have been adopted in the two series. But that’s not all: the two world championships have different sponsors, and it won’t be easy to take into account the demands of all business partners.
However, Ezpeleta thinks it is still possible to implement the plan.
“Stefano Domenicali and I have had a great relationship for a long time and we have been thinking about such a project for some time,” said the head of Dorna. – Of course it is not that simple, but I can say that we have not given up on this idea. If the project can be done, we will do it.”
