Daytona: Porsche Penske wins, Button’s team is third

The Porsche Penske Motorsport team won the 24 Hours of Daytona marathon – today’s success is already being called ‘historic’, as the last time a car from the Stuttgart brand won this race was more than twenty years ago.

The winner of the most famous American endurance race was the Porsche 963 crew consisting of Felipe Nasr, a former Formula 1 driver, Matt Campbell, Dane Cameron and Josef Newgarden, who won the Indy 500 in 2023.

Right to the finish, the No. 7 car was attacked by the Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing team hypercar driven by Tom Blomqvist, last year’s winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, but the Swede saw the checkered flag 2.112 seconds after the Felipe Nasr’s Porsche.

Third place was taken by the crew of Jenson Button – the 2009 world champion, together with his partners Louis Deletraz, Jordan Taylor and Colton Herta, who performed in the Acura ARX-06 sports prototype of the WTRAndretti team. This can be considered a worthy result, especially considering that the No. 40 car was a full lap behind the leader about halfway through the distance due to technical problems. But the riders were able to make up for it and at the finish they lost to Felipe Nasr’s team by less than 13 seconds.

It is worth noting that four teams from the top six raced in Porsche 963 hypercars. However, if the first five cars completed this in 45 seconds, the Porsche 963 sports prototype of the JDC-Miller MotorSports team that finished sixth, lost to the leader through more than two rounds.

Among the heroes of Formula 1 from the past we can also mention Felipe Massa, for whom it was his debut in Daytona – the crew of the Riley team, for which the Brazilian veteran competed, took 11th place overall and 3rd in LMP2 -class .
