Everyone remembers the story that Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were friends in their youth, they played for the same team in karting, and in general they had a great relationship for a long time, but everything changed when they became partners at Mercedes in 2013 in the Formula 1.
Rosberg told Eurosport Deutschland on the air of the Eurosport Deutschland TV channel about what caused the disagreements of former friends, how their relationship deteriorated, which incidentally has not been 100% recovered to this day.
“It happened as soon as we started competing for the world championship, not before,” said Niko, who won the title in 2016. “But that’s how it always goes. When you strive to succeed in every race while fighting for the title, friendships stop working.
You have to test the limits of the possible, use all means to win, including questionable ones. Plus, when it comes to two high-level riders, the relationship often escalates.
If you want to win the title, you can no longer play the old games. However, I don’t regret anything. It was a great time and we were part of an exciting fight. I am very proud of it. But now our relationships are pretty neutral, and that’s normal.
But the funny thing is, our teams are now competing in the Extreme E Series again! We weren’t aware of each other’s plans, but we were making our teams at the same time. Overall, it worked out well when we held their presentations only a few weeks apart! It’s great that our game has resumed.”
