Malaysian state oil company Petroliam Nasional, better known as Petronas, hopes to bring Formula 1 back to the country in 2026.
The Sepang circuit hosted the Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017, but subsequently stopped the race due to declining ticket sales and rising organizational costs. However, Sepang continues to host MotoGP and other racing series.
According to informed sources, plans for Formula 1’s return to Malaysia in 2026 were discussed last Tuesday with the participation of Petronas president Tengka Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.
Petronas and Formula 1 have not yet commented on this information, but officials in Malaysia previously said the country could not afford to host the World Cup stage. Apparently sponsorship from Petronas will solve the financial problem.
