It was recently announced that Formula 1 owners Liberty Media have registered several trademarks relating to the Chicago Grand Prix. Such registrations are often made as measures to protect intellectual property, but it is possible that Formula 1 is considering the possibility of holding a race.
Last year, Chicago hosted the first NASCAR race on the city circuit, but local politicians doubt whether the Formula 1 stage has any prospects. This view was expressed by Chicago City Council member Brian Hopkins.
Brian Hopkins: “I was told that in Formula 1 they usually offer to sign a contract for at least ten years straight away. And this deadline seems non-negotiable. As far as I know, negotiations with the city have not progressed beyond a certain timeline.
For NASCAR we welded some manhole covers, smoothed out a few rough spots and called the resulting thing a race track. This is not suitable for Formula 1; the circuit design is more complex, making the price much higher.”
