Damon Hill commented on Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming transfer from Mercedes to Ferrari. The 1996 world champion believes Lewis took such a step because he doubted Mercedes’ prospects of building a championship car.
“I think if Lewis had honestly believed that he was guaranteed an eighth title or that there was at least a 50% chance that he could win the title with Mercedes, he would have stayed,” Hill told Sky Sports News. “Hamilton has probably reached the stage where he has been hearing the same Mercedes song over and over again for years, so he now thinks he needs to cheer up in his final seasons in Formula 1.
What could be better than driving for Ferrari? When something goes wrong, Lewis can always say, “At least I tried.”
Another former Formula 1 driver, Karun Chandhok, also wonders what is behind Hamilton’s decision to switch teams: “The biggest question is why these events are happening now? And we all want to hear the answer straight from Lewis.
Just a few months ago, on August 31, Lewis’ new two-year contract with Mercedes was announced for 2024 and 2025. And now Lewis has suddenly lost confidence in the Mercedes project.
Does he no longer believe that the team can provide him with a car in which he will have the chance to compete with Max Verstappen? Or has Lewis succumbed to romance and is simply drawn by the opportunity to drive a red Ferrari?
