Martin Brundle: Hamilton at Ferrari is a beautiful story

Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle was excited by the news of Lewis Hamilton’s impending move to Ferrari.

Martin Brundle: “Lewis hasn’t won a race for years and now we’re seeing a change. He returned to work with Mark Hines, who had been his long-time mentor and his eyes and ears in the paddock. This is the person who should be in your circle.

I think Lewis might have decided it was time to stop thinking about things outside of motorsport and go back to Lewis Hamilton, who was just a racing driver. I think it really motivated him and gave him energy at this stage of his career.

I have interviewed Lewis many times over the years and always asked him if he had any desire to follow in Michael Schumacher’s footsteps and join Ferrari and try to become champion again. And he always answered me: “I have been working with Mercedes since the time I played for McLaren. My cars had Mercedes engines. They are my team and my car manufacturer for life.”

We all understand what’s happening right now, and I’m absolutely thrilled. Hamilton at Ferrari is a great story.

At the beginning of this week I was feeling a bit down. Lando Norris has a long contract with McLaren, just like Oscar Piastri. George Russell has a long-term contract with Mercedes, Charles Leclerc has a multi-year contract with Ferrari and Max Verstappen has a multi-year contract with Red Bull. Everything seemed quite static and I thought we needed strong stories. Moreover, Andretti’s offer was rejected, so the Lewis story is what we need to inject energy.”
