Gary Anderson: Haas F1 won’t go higher than 10th

Gary Anderson, former race car designer and now technical expert for The Race, thinks the Haas team can count on little in 2024.

We can say with all certainty that two things will happen next season: one of the teams will win the Constructors’ Championship and another will finish in last place.

Red Bull Racing, Mercedes and Ferrari are contenders for championship victory. The order in which they finish the season may not necessarily be the same, but Red Bull should be considered favorites given their results in previous seasons.

It is also not easy to predict who will take last place, but it will go to one of these four: Haas, Stake, Williams or the team formerly called AlphaTauri.

Let’s start with it. The Faenza team has strengthened its organization, both through the recruitment of new specialists and through closer cooperation with Red Bull.

Williams is managed by James Vowles and Pat Fry is now responsible for the technical side of things – both are strong professionals and know what they want. Hinwil has secured James Key, and he is well placed to tackle the technical challenges and help Stake build a bright future as it becomes an Audi works team in 2026.

That leaves Haas. Last-minute changes in leadership are unlikely to strengthen the organization. She was the first to introduce her vehicle, which means that by the time everyone starts testing, the VF-24 will already be somewhat outdated, and in order to overtake its rivals it is necessary to establish a clear modernization plan set. But this is exactly what Haas has never learned in all its years of racing in Formula 1.

It is also worth emphasizing that they will have to work without having to rely on additional financing. It turns out that Haas won’t rise higher than 10th in the team rankings unless they pull off a miracle, or one of their opponents completely messes up. I hope I’m wrong – when I say this, I worry in advance about all the employees of this team, but I don’t see how it can improve the results.
