Last season, Liam Lawson replaced Daniel Ricciardo, who broke his wrist, at five Grands Prix. This year the New Zealander has been named reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Visa RB, but will not be able to take part in Friday’s practice sessions as he has lost his ‘young driver’ status after five Grand Prix events.
In an interview with the New Zealand Herald, Lawson said that the program for next season is still being discussed, but that he would like to get behind the wheel of Formula 1 because Helmut Marko promised him a full season in 2025.
Liam Lawson: “I would love to get behind the wheel of Formula 1 this year, we are working to make this happen during testing or racing, but nothing has been confirmed yet. These issues are discussed before the start of the season, during the season and towards the end of it.
It is a shame that we failed to win the title in the Japanese SuperFormula series last year. We understood that success was possible, that the speed was there, but it was clear that more was needed to win the championship. I regret some missed opportunities during the season, but this was also the experience I needed.”
