The Singapore government plans to conduct another detailed audit of the Formula 1 race contract – this is due to a corruption scandal centered on S. Iswaran, now the city-state’s former transport minister.
It was announced on Monday that the government has also asked the Singapore Tourism Board to review everything surrounding the 2022 Grand Prix. As reported by NDTV, this was announced today in the country’s parliament by Grace Fu, the acting Minister of Trade Relations.
S. Iswaran has already been charged with 27 charges, including corruption and obstruction of justice, but he is mainly suspected of embezzlement of material assets during the period he held a ministerial post. The investigation is still ongoing and Grace Fu declined to comment further on the case.
The current contract with Formula 1 stipulates that the popular city race will be held on the Marina Bay circuit until 2028.
In January, Singapore’s Ministry of Labor and Industry, which is part of the investigation, released a statement that we quoted at the time: “There is nothing to indicate that the Formula 1 contracts or other agreements were entered into with the intention of causing harm . government.” .
Grace Fu also confirmed that despite anti-corruption procedures, the Singapore government intends to honor all agreements with Formula 1 and that preparations for the 2024 Grand Prix have already begun.
