According to Haas F1 team principal Günter Steiner, the partnership with the veteran Kevin Magnussen will positively influence Mick Schumacher and contribute to his professional development.
“This is the best thing that could happen to him. Mick was very happy when I told him that we signed a contract with Kevin, – Steiner said in an interview with Red Bulletin. – Magnussen is very cooperative, he cares about Mika, tries him help if he can, and doesn’t try hard to compete with him.
Mick is lucky to have such a partner, because you can learn a lot from Kevin, both on a human and professional level, as Schumacher studies his telemetry. Now Mick is in a more comfortable mood than last year.”
Mick Schumacher only earned his first points in his 31st Grand Prix, but then finished in the top ten again in Austria, finishing 6th. But before that, there were extremely failed stages in Saudi Arabia and Monaco, where the German rider suffered serious accidents that cost the team dearly. After that, Steiner scolded his young subordinate very hard, but he is sure that this only benefited Mick.
“I can’t praise him for that because we haven’t scored any points and he hasn’t made any progress as a driver. This is bad, – noted the head of the US team. – I give my opinion more openly than many other people, I do it more directly – so what? If anyone doesn’t like it, don’t talk to me.
A lot of interest in Miku comes from his background, but to me he’s just as much a racer as everyone else. That’s the way it should be.”
