Commenting on Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes, Toto Wolff made it clear that he sees George Russell as the new team leader. Former Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan has expressed his doubts whether the young British driver can become champion in the coming years.
Eddie Jordan: “Let’s be honest: George Russell has only won one race. Do I think he can become champion next season or the year after? I just think Lewis put a lot of pressure on him.
When Lewis didn’t have the car he wanted early last year, George was able to overtake him, but that didn’t bother Lewis at all. Wasn’t worried because Lewis felt the car wasn’t good enough to do his job.
However, as the season progressed, Lewis returned to his old form. And then many of us thought, ‘Maybe Lewis can still do a lot.’ I think it was because of these changes that he decided to go to Ferrari.”
