Formula E has announced that the NXT Gen Cup series will support racing at some stages of the season in 2024. The Swedish promoters who organized this competition are positioning this competition as “the world’s first all-electric youth touring series, with both male and female racers participating.”
The idea, of course, is to help young talent gain experience and attract the attention of those in power in the motorsport world, since the further stages of their careers, as a rule, depend on them.
The NXT Gen Cup races – the name can be translated as ‘New Generation Cup’ – will be held on all European legs of Formula 1’s 10th season, i.e. in Misano, Monaco, Berlin and London. The names of participants and competitors, many of whom are under 17, are promised to be announced next week. And the first of such races will take place at the Italian circuit in Misano on April 13 and 14.
Two more rounds of the series, which successfully debuted last year, will be held as preliminary races during the DTM Touring Car Championships at the Norisring and Hockenheim.
Each race lasts 20 minutes, preceded by two 20-minute practice sessions – with the exception of the Monaco stage, where only one free practice session is scheduled. Qualifying also lasts 20 minutes. The NXT Gen Cup uses electric racing cars produced by the Swedish Lestrup Racing Team, built based on the front-wheel drive MINI Cooper SE.
