Berger: Ferrari not ready to fight for title yet

Gerhard Berger once played for Ferrari, first spending three seasons there, starting in 1987, and returning in 1993 after three seasons at McLaren. But at the same time, the Austrian driver has a long-standing relationship with the company Red Bull, which is led by his compatriot Dietrich Mateschitz.

Therefore, it is difficult for Berger to decide on his sympathy when following the events on the Formula 1 circuits, but he thinks the sport will mainly benefit from the confrontation between Ferrari and Red Bull Racing.

Gerhard Berger “I once played six seasons for the Scureria, and if you’re a Ferrari driver, this is forever. But at the same time I have a long relationship with Red Bull, which actually started before this company was founded – in 1985, when I played for Arrows.

That’s why it’s not easy for me now to decide who I support more – for Ferrari or for Red Bull. And speaking of their confrontation this season, we have to start with the fact that this is very cool for Formula 1. But it is necessary that at least two more teams participate in the battle for the wins – for example McLaren and someone otherwise .

It’s great that Ferrari is back in the game, but if Mercedes intervened periodically in its dispute with Red Bull it would be even better. But already the races are very interesting and Formula 1 has returned to the level it should be, this is exactly what the fans need.

But how are things going this weekend in France? Paul-Ricard has always been a bit different from other tracks, there is a very flat track and overall the ring configuration there is special. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes cars perform a little better on this track.

However, I foresee that the great battle between Ferrari and Red Bull Racing will unfold again. Judging by the fact that Mercedes has always had certain problems this year, in my opinion this team is not ready to claim victories.

I am impressed by Charles Leclerc’s talent: he is a master of qualifying and in one fast lap he can show excellent speed. But when we talk about the qualities that come to the fore during the Grand Prix, Verstappen has a small advantage in my opinion. Max is great at racing, makes effective use of every opportunity, works well in sharp episodes when the battle goes wheel to wheel and overtakes perfectly.

He is very good at analyzing the events on the track and predicting their development, along with the Red Bull Racing strategists who also do their job very well. To this must be added the clear actions of this team at the pit stops. All together makes her almost invincible.

However, in some situations Ferrari’s advantage appears and Leclerc implements it perfectly. But the Scuderia has occasional reliability issues. So it was in Austria, and if Sainz hadn’t retired, we would have seen that Carlos could probably show a good result too. But taking points from his partner could prevent Ferrari from competing for the title.

Still, I don’t think Ferrari is making a mistake in letting its drivers compete. Formula 1 is a sport and as long as both drivers have a chance at the title, I don’t think the team should get involved in that.

From history we remember that there have always been teams that relied on team tactics, but we remember other examples. In particular, Williams was once distinguished by the fact that for them the sport was the most important. Frank Williams didn’t care who became the champion – Piqué or Mansell. He too could use team tactics, but only in the last race of the season, not before.

That’s why I really like the approach Ferrari is taking now. It is possible that this could influence the results of the championship, but perhaps they can prevent it.

As for Verstappen, it seems to me that he is performing even better this year than last season. The problem with Ferrari is that they haven’t fought for the championship in a long time and are not psychologically ready for it, unlike Red Bull. It seems to me that the Scuderia needs another year or two before the team is fully prepared to win championships.

If the battle for the title escalates, Red Bull will have an advantage in this situation, they will be helped by last year’s experience.
