Formula 2 testing in Bahrain continued on Monday, the first full day of two sessions, as the youth series drivers only worked at the circuit in the evening yesterday.
In the final standings, Zane Maloney, a 20-year-old driver from Barbados, racing for the Rodin Motorsport team for the second year, was in first place. But in the first session of the day he only finished 8th and the best time was set by Kush Maini, a Virtuosi Racing driver.
At the start of the evening session, Maloney also kept a low profile, and the first to show a more or less representative time was Gabriel Bortoleto, Maini’s teammate; At the same time, Jack Crawford, who has now joined Aston Martin’s youth program, rose to second place.
Crawford and Isaac Hajjar then took turns topping the timesheets before Maloney showed what he could do with a lap of 1:44.919.
Less than 30 minutes into the session, red flags appeared on the track due to the stop of Trident driver Roman Stanek’s car.
When the races resumed, Crawford returned to first place, but was quickly displaced by Enzo Fittipaldi, who has been racing for Van Amersfoort Racing since this year. The time of the representative of the famous racing family was 1:44.135 at this stage of the session.
This result took quite a long time, but Maloney improved it, after which Hadjar did the same, after which Fittipaldi rose sharply and again climbed to the top of the protocol, 27 minutes before the end of the session he was the first to complete a lap faster than 1 minute . 42 seconds. But when Zane Maloney returned to the track, he beat the Brazilian’s time by a few tenths: 1:41.501.
This time was never surpassed, perhaps in part because the session had to be stopped early due to red flags following technical problems with Zach O’Sullivan’s ART car. This happened three minutes before the end of the session, so it makes sense that the races did not resume.
