Williams tested new items on Alex Albon’s car during the stages at Silverstone and Austria. On the eve of the French Grand Prix, the team confirmed that Nicolas Latifi will receive updates at the Paul Ricard circuit.
Dave Robson, chief race engineer: “In previous races, some of the new items were just for Alex, but now we can post updates on both cars. While the weather at Silverstone and the set-up of the sprint weekend in Austria were not ideal for testing, we received encouraging feedback confirming that the team has taken a step forward.
It looks like the weather will be warm and stable over the weekend so Nicholas will be able to test the new items in practice on Friday and we will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of all updates.
Pirelli will bring the “average” trio of compositions – this combination was at the beginning of the season and the last time on the podium in Miami. In the next two races, we will also be using this combination of tires, so it’s important to quickly approach them again.
For last year’s race the asphalt was touched up which, combined with the wet track, led to some tire granulation. Let’s see how the coating condition has changed in 12 months, but taking into account the weather forecast, the granulation should be less. However, high temperatures and pressures on the tires can cause the rubber to overheat – this should be checked during the race.
Nicholas Latific: “I am very happy to be racing in France because at this stage I will receive updates about the car. We’ve seen positive signs of the new products on Alex’s machine, and now I want to evaluate them too. I hope they will help to increase the speed a bit, which will help in the fight against rivals.
France has a unique circuit with wide safety zones, so respecting the track boundaries can again become a problem, just like in Austria. I am especially looking forward to the further development of the car and I hope that we will gather information that will allow us to move forward.
Alex Albon: “I’m looking forward to the race in France – in the last stage in Austria we gathered more information that the team analyzed. I hope we keep attacking this weekend, unlock the potential of the machine and get a good result.
The track consists of medium and fast corners, which provides a good opportunity to assess the car’s potential.”
