Just like on Monday, Rodin Motorsport’s Zane Maloney set the pace on the final day of Formula 2 pre-season testing in Bahrain. He recorded his best lap at the end of today’s second session in 1:42.468.
But in the first session, Campos Racing duo Isaac Hadjar and his new partner, 18-year-old José María Martí Sobrepera, better known as Pepe Martí, were in front. Last season the Spaniard competed in Formula 3 and took 5th place in the individual competition.
Hajjar set his best time in the first half hour of the session, completing a lap of 1:45.331, with Marty finishing just over 0.2 seconds behind his time. Indian Invicta Racing driver Kush Maini was already about 0.9 seconds behind Isaac, who showed the third result.
The difference in results in the first and second sessions is explained by the fact that the teams mainly worked on long series of laps and simulated the race during the day. Joshua Duerksen, a newcomer to PHM AIX Racing, worked the most actively: during the day he completed 51 laps behind the wheel of the German team’s car.
In the evening session, the top ten consisted of both drivers with experience in Formula 2 and newcomers. Maloney has already been mentioned, Jack Crawford showed the second fastest time of the day, but Ritomo Miata, last year’s champion of the Japanese Super Formula series, who moved to F2 this season, moved up to third place. Like Maloney, he drives for the Rodin Motorsport team.
Azek Hadjar was not that far behind the top three, losing just 0.028 seconds to the Japanese. Enzo Fittipaldi finished the tests in fifth place, followed by Pepe Marti.
It can be added that the three best results of the day were shown in the last hour of testing. Now the Formula 2 teams return to this circuit on the last day of February to hold the first round of the season.
