Former Mercedes-Benz Motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug admitted he was shocked when he heard Hamilton was leaving for Ferrari.
Norbert Haug: “If I were to bet that the collaboration between any two parties would last forever, I would bet on Hamilton and Mercedes. When I heard Lewis was leaving, I was completely shocked. I would swear on all my oaths that it will always be this way, that Hamilton will become a brand ambassador or take on some other role in the company after his retirement.
With Hamilton gone, Mercedes loses more than just a driver. I’m talking about the mark he left on Formula 1. Why do people say there is one superstar in Formula 1? Of course Max Verstappen is the fastest, he is growing up. But the statements Lewis makes, his achievements, his actions off the court, his fight for equal treatment based on gender or skin color: these are very important contributions.”
